Growing up in the smallish country town of Young in regional NSW, TCW found himself in between a culture of rugby league and his desire to express himself through art.
His first musical influences came from his parents, with his father being a die hard elvis fan, with the occasional Beatles, Neil Young and Eagles thrown in the mix, and his mother loving Tina Turner and the home grown Jimmy Barnes.
TCWs first real introduction to what was poppin at the time came from his Next door neighbours, older boys, who were heavily immersed in the metal and grunge era of the late 90s, blasting bands like Nirvana, Korn, Pearl Jam and Limp Bizkit from their garage under their family home. TCW found himself gravitating toward the sounds often hanging out with the younger brother of the Gibbons boys while he ripped it on his fender stratocaster.
TCWs first album he ever owned, a gift from his neighbour, was silverchair’s frogstomp, an 11 track grunge classic stamped with the iconic fluorescent green frog on the cover. He fell in love with the album even attempting to perform the politically charged banger pure massacre at his year 3 talent show but was stopped because the content of the lyrics was deemed “inappropriate”.
As TCW moved into adolescence he was heavily influenced by his father who was obsessed with rugby league and boxing, and his older cousin who was gun halfback and popular character around town. TCW, a skilled athlete in his own right, played representative footy during this time, and was and is a gun boxer with a left hook that resembles the likes of Tommy Morrison. Although he had some of his best years playing footy TCWs heart was never in it, getting more enjoyment of recording himself sing old classics with an old hand held tape recorder every afternoon after school.
The years following saw TCW go through periods of learning instruments such as guitar and drums but nothing seemed to stick as he was treated with disrespect by his “Jock” and generally disrespectful family members, and was essentially disheartened by the experience.
As the relentless unforgiving march of time pushed forward TCW fell into general delinquent behaviour cruising around town in old commodores, fighting in the streets and causing general drunken havok, drinking excessively to manage the intense anxieties of not pursuing his true self.
TCW would eventually move to Maroubra, following the footsteps of his older cousin who had garnered some respect off the local lads playing for the Rabbitohs under 21s. TCW would play some footy for the local team, Coogee wombats, but his heart was still not in it, eventually leading to again falling into general delinquent behaviour, being introduced to Sydney street culture, jumping smack bang into a non stop billy train 10 deep in small apartments “smoking suzi’s till ya greened” dreamin N schemin, racking cloths and working dead end quick earn jobs to get by.
When working as a removalist in Hillsdale in Sydney’s south, TCW would be offered to buy a hot laptop by one of the boys who was a committed meth head! and quickly jumped at the offer. After scoring the new apple lappy TCW would come across garageband and quickly begin making mock up beats and recording fuck around bars as a joke. After getting complimented on his style on the mic strait off the bat TCW became more and more interested in the process. One day when balls deep in a fast moving billy train one of the oisies offered to put music on TCWs lappy and although he was that blazed he couldn’t see straight, he quickly threw his laptop to this southeast creature for the uploads.
With his laptop now full with thousands of hip hop songs TCW would become obsessed with certain acts such as Biggie Smalls, Non Phixion, Army Of Pharaohs and Wu Tang Clan to name a few. The following years would see TCW beginning to commit to the discipline of lyrical kung fu choosing only to showcase his skills midway through drinking and smoking sessions with his close mates.
TCW would go onto further becoming disheartened with his artistic expression in the following years as learning pro tools, recording and production just seemed like an unattainable venture, as he had no contacts in the game at all in terms of local producers and artists, and hip hop in general was still in its infancy in a sense so there wasn’t a large demographic of people to reach out too.
TCW would eventually move back to canberra, falling back in with his old acquaintances and an elevated level of delinquent behavior, running mucks, not working, smoking meth living with strippers and drug dealers, and getting involved in crime, tagging along on missions, living very reckless.
After getting fed up with the unsustainable fried going ons of canberra and the scheming two faced people who would frequent the garages of that cooked city, TCW would move back to maroubra beach where things would really go down hill around him. Living with serious meth addicts and people with chronic mental health problems (hood shit) TCW would find himself in very negative environment. Despite this, TCW wouldn’t be silly enough to get hooked on meth himself during this period, choosing rather to capitalise on the situation, hustling to the monkeys around him whilst getting back to sharpening his lyrical skills in his room with a locked door.
As that lifecycle drew to a close TCW decided to live one out for a time getting more and more focused on hip hop production, recording and rap. After seeing that he was gonna need funds to pursue rap, TCW decided to move back into his parents small apartment in Cronulla which is situated down the coast from sydney a bit. Surrounded by a bunch of egotistic yobbos TCW would mostly stick to himself sharpening his skills, although he would fall in with some locals where he would dabble in old toxic habits of drinking and drugs.
After dedicating himself to pursuing rap with very limited funds for the next few years and going nowhere TCW would again become disheartened, again gravitating more toward hustling. TCW then decided to give rapping the flick all together spending all his time running around in his little blue 91 mazda hatchback and training like a spartan, sharpening his boxing skills. By this time TCW was 30 years of age which added to the anxieties of pursuing rap. TCW proceeded to upgrade the hatchback to a modest D22 ute with the cash he was making. Although he thought the ute was a good purchase it was still not upto the standards of the onkeydays he was surrounded by.
TCW continued to hustle for a time where he would be offered fake dodgy (unbeknownst to him) benzodiazepines by a friend of a friend who dribbled when talking and had obvious cognitive impairments. Taking these, what TCW believed were valiums (but were actually highly addictive completely banned substances), set in motion 5 years of hell where TCW would slowly become dependant, get arrested twice for drug supply, loose what modest capital he had gained and wind up completely fried in a place darker than hell itself.
Isolated alone in the depths of the abyss confused about what was happening with himself, having gone through multiple jobs where he was misused and sacked TCW had an epiphany one day. He realised it was the pills all along that had melted his cognitive functions and not depression like the dodgy doctors and toxic family members had reinforced in his effected mind. From here TCW would go completely cold turkey which would be the beginnings of the worst 2 years of his life. Hit with severe acute withdrawal symptoms TCW found himself in the fight for his life while attempting to maintain full time jobs driving trucks which was, in his own words;
“one indescribable hell of a mindstate after the next, worse than death itself, relentless and persistent demons constantly mocking you and torturing your existence for over two years strait with very little rest, difficult is an understatement”.
From here while focusing on getting healthy TCW was forced to face all of his flaws and make sense of his reality through much study and meditation through GOD. During this time whilst working on music TCW would have a profound experience through hip hop when a certain artist spoke directly to him through his album, a truly spiritual experience, which would inspire him beyond comprehension. Now at the age of 34 and on the back end of acute benzodiazepine withdrawals TCW has refused to give up and is now on the verge of completing a self produced 13 track concept album where he brings in all his wisdom from his life experiences which sees him in discourse with his own low self esteem as he navigates himself through his unique life.
Im built different, God knew i could handle it in the fashion i did, thats why he allowed it, he is preparing me for something big, I truly believe that”
Although TCW understands his production still needs much progression to fully evolve, he believes this piece of work is a sufficient introduction for him to be recognised as a fully fledged hip hop artist with the potential to match the greats.
